Making the most of your day is all about sleep—especially if you’re planning an early workout. How much you sleep. What type of sleep you get. When to awaken from sleep. But, despite what we’ve all been told about unplugging before bed to increase our quality of sleep, there is one technology that changes everything. Hello: Sleep Cycle.

The Sleep Cycle app tracks your sleep patterns and wakes you up during light sleep. Waking up during light sleep feels like waking up naturally rested without an alarm clock.

Sleep Cycles

While you sleep, you go through cycles of sleep states. The first state in a sleep cycle is light sleep, followed by deep sleep and a dream state referred REM or Rapid Eye Movement sleep. A full sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes and is normally repeated several times each night.

Did you know during an eight-hour sleep pattern, the average adult only spends approximately 1.5 hours (or 20% of total sleep time) in REM sleep? REM sleep is important because it is the restorative part of our sleep cycle. Deep REM sleep plays a crucial role in physical health. During REM sleep, blood flow decreases to the brain and redirects itself towards the muscles, allowing the body and mind to rest and recover.

Sleep Cycle App

Your movements vary with each sleep phase. Sleep Cycle uses sound analysis to identify sleep states by tracking movements in bed. Sleep Cycle uses a wake up phase (30 minutes by default) that ends at your desired alarm time. During this phase Sleep Cycle will monitor signals from your body to wake you softly, when you are in the lightest possible sleep state.

The more REM sleep you get, the more likely you will wake feeling refreshed and ready for peak performance during the day. Sleep Cycle is available through the App Store for iOS and Android. For more deets, check out their website.
