Last week, we celebrated National Girls & Women in Sports Day in the most Play Like a Girl-est way possible: with The United State of Women Empowerment Forum on Confidence, Leadership & Playing Like a Girl at First Tennessee Park. They shut down their club facility for a private soiree (Ooh la la!) just for Play Like a Girl supporters. So, of course, we partied it up—big time.
From 9 to 11:30 a.m., girls and women mixed, mingled and stargazed with the help of an exclusive meet-and-greet with pro fast pitcher Monica Abbott, Olympians Michelle Carter and Kara Lynn Joyce, and other fabulous guests. Monica Fawknotson, Director of Metro Nashville Sports Authority, welcomed our guests to Nashville with inspirational remarks that got us all excited about the hours to follow.
Title IX vet Pat Pierce reminded us about how far we’ve come in the world of sports while WNBA Dallas Wings’ prez, Mary O’Connor, got us hype with her talk on how we can all help continue expanding opportunities for girls and women in sports. We also had Kennetra Searcy, the wife of Tennessee Titans’ safety Da’Norris Searcy, to keep our guests full of laughter.
A celebration like this wouldn’t have been complete without awards for some extra special people. We honored Christi Beth Adams, Shan Foster and Music City Girls Lead for their impact in the lives of local girls and women in sports.
Meanwhile, forum attendees from near and far watched along via Facebook Live (over 10k views and 100k people reached). Plus, moms and girls from local softball leagues shopped til they dropped at our #IPLAYLIKEAGIRL kiosk where t-shirts, headbands and the Big Ol’ Duffle were available for purchase.
It was great to hang with all of you, so thanks to everyone who came out. And of course, a big thanks to our pals at The United State of Women for co-hosting this event with us and to the Nashville Sounds for welcoming us to the ball park. If you’re not getting our emails, sign up here for exclusive intel on our upcoming events and happenings around Nashville and across the country. See you soon!
